Third Grade is a wonderful grade, because there are so many fun things to do and learn. It is the "gateway" to the Intermediate years. We are busy this year learning to become organized writers, proficient readers, and creative mathematicians. We are having fun trying new hands on experiments in science, while learning and exploring continents and countries of the world in social studies. All this and cursive, what a great year ahead!
Third grade is a challenging, yet rewarding grade.
In Third Grade You Can...
- be nominated to be a helper on stage at Morning Program.
- study different countries around the world!
- have a Celebration of Nations.
- run the Book Store!
- create a Leprechaun Trap.
- go on some exciting field trips!
- learn to write in cursive.
- There is a lot more, but you will have to wait to find out!
Here are some ways to help your child achieve academic success:
- Have your child explain information from a newspaper, magazine or book to you.
- Keep a dialogue journal. You and your child will write back and forth to each other on a daily or weekly basis.
- Make predictions about favorite television shows or characters during commercials.
- Read aloud to your child and have your child read to you.
- Ask relevant questions using who, what, where, when, how and why?
- Work with and support your child's teacher(s) and school.
- Review daily assignments.
- Have your child help you with cooking and shopping to understand the many uses for math in our everyday lives.
- Make learning and receiving a good education a priority.
Supply list
Your child will need the following supplies for third grade:
- 1 big eraser
- 1 box 24 pack of crayons
- 4 pencils
- 1 three ring binder (1 inch)
- 1 marble composition notebook
- The following folders: (the plastic style lasts all year)
- 1 red for ELA
- 1 green for science
- 1 blue for social studies
- 1 yellow for unfinished work
- 1 purple Friday folder (to take weekly work home in)

- 3 dozen #2 Pencils
- 2 Composition notebooks
- 1 (1 ½ inch Binder with Plastic Cover) White
- 5 vinyl (plastic) pocket folders (Yellow, Blue, Red, Green, Purple)
- 1 package of loose-leaf paper
- 1 box of crayons
- colored pencils
- highlighters
- scissors
- glue sticks
- 3 dry erase marker
- cap erasers
- an old, clean sock for dry erase boards

Grade 3 ELA Testing:
On the ELA test students may be asked to:
- Listen to a story read aloud and answer questions about what they have just heard.
- Answer questions about a passage they have read.
- Identify and correct grammar, punctuation and other errors in a passage they have read. (Source:NYSUT)
Grade 3 Math Testing:
On the Math test students may be asked to:
- Answer multiple-choice questions.
- Answer open-ended questions that require them to show and explain in words how they arrived at their answer.
- Read and interpret graphs and tables.
- Recognize and use signs, symbols and terms that represent mathematical concepts. (Source: NYSUT)
Test Time:
Each test will consist of two or three sessions. The total test time ranges from 70 minutes to 150 minutes depending on the grade level and subject (NYSUT).
